History of Men's Cricket in Nepal
The ruling Rana clan brought cricket to Nepal for the first time in the early 1900s. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN)was founded in 1946 and joined the ICC as an Associate member in 1996. Due to alleged government meddling, the ICC suspended the board in 2016, and the suspension was only overturned three years later.
Although Nepal had a strong Under-19 team since the 2000s, their big break as a senior team came in 2014 when they made it to the T20 World Cup for the first time.
They won their first T20I match at the World Cup, defeating Hong Kong by an innings. At the tournament, they defeated Afghanistan as well. Ever since, Nepal has become a major player in Associate cricket. In 2018, they also achieved ODI status for the first time.
They qualified for their first Asia Cup by winning the ACC Men's Premier Cup, and they also clinched their spot at the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier after placing third in the CWC League 2 standings.
It was a glorious run for them in 2023. After that, they completed the year by qualifying for the T20 World Cup 2024—their first appearance in ten years.
