India wins the T20 World Cup after crushing England in semi-final
In the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup on Thursday, a commanding India crushed England by 68 runs to terminate their title defence and guarantee their spot in the championship match against South Africa.
In the Saturday final, England's batters were bowled for 103 in 16.4 overs after being set 172 on a challenging pitch. With 23, captain Jos Buttler gave them a good start, but he was the first of four wickets for 20 runs.
England were 68-6 and the game was over when the excellent Kuldeep Yadav (3-19) bowled Harry Brook for 25. However, there was still time for two appalling run-outs.
Although this was mostly down to Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav's brilliance, Buttler's team was also guilty of letting India reach a higher score than they should have.
With a brilliant partnership of 73 from 50 balls, they overcame a slow surface that also kept low to lead India to 171-7, with Rohit scoring 57 and Suryakumar scoring 47.
In a match between the two undefeated teams in the tournament, India, who hasn't won a World Cup in thirteen years, will take on South Africa, the inaugural winners, in Barbados.
Indeed, Buttler stated, "India outplayed us." We may have allowed them to score 20–25 too many points on a difficult surface that they performed well on. They deserved to win so much.
In India last year, England was unable to retain their 50-overs World Cup championship under Buttler's leadership.
