Men's team legend from Sri Lanka appointed temporary head coach
Chris Silverwood, the head coach of Sri Lanka, resigned after his team's dismal performance in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and their elimination from the group stage.
Former opener and icon Sanath Jayasuriya has been named by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as the team's temporary coach through the conclusion of their test series against England in September.
Jayasuriya has previously worked for Sri Lanka cricket as a consultant and as the team's head selector for men's cricket. Along with traveling with the team, the 55-year-old played in the USA and the West Indies for the T20 World Cup.
Silverwood's coaching career was highlighted by accomplishments before the T20 World Cup, including winning the T20 Asia Cup in 2022, finishing second in the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023, and winning other bilateral series.
With an amazing 21,032 runs and 440 wickets from 586 matches across all formats for Sri Lanka, Jayasuriya offers a wealth of experience to the team.
One of the most potent opening batsmen of his generation, Jayasuriya has worked as a selector for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in the past and is now a full-time cricket consultant.
