West Indies wins a huge battle over Afghanistan thanks to Pooran's 98 skills
At the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Monday night, the West Indies were in a celebratory moodas they defeated Afghanistan and recorded the biggest Powerplay score in T20 World Cup history.
The highlight of the match was Nicholas Pooran, who led the hosts to their highest T20 World Cup score of 218 for five after blasting them to 92 for one in the Powerplay. Even though it didn't affect Super Eight spots, the Group C match was essential to keeping momentum going.
With 98 off 53 balls, Pooran finished just short of a century. He hit eight sixes and six fours, smashing his previous T20 International best of 82. Afghanistan responded with 114 all out in 16.2 overs, but his explosive innings enabled the Windies to secure a decisive 104-run victory.
With 35 runs in an explosive over from Azmatullah Omarzai, the left-handed Pooran already the West Indies' top run scorer in T20 Internationals pushed his career total above 2,000. With the Windies at 73 for one early in the match, this overset the tone for the team.
