Biratnagar Kings set 118-run target for Kathmandu Gurkhas
KATHMANDU: When the Biratnagar Kings and Kathmandu Gurkhas played in the Nepal Premier League on Sunday at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, the Kings set a low goal of 118 runs. The decision by Kathmandu to field first paid off, as their bowlers made early inroads. Opening batsman Lokesh Bam was leg-before the third over when Dan Douthwaite hit.
Nicholas Kirton (12) and Dipak Bohara (20) of Biratnagar attempted to rally during the powerplay but were quickly dismissed, putting their side in a precarious 38-2 position. Under pressure from Kathmandu's bowlers, especially Gerhard Erasmus and Dipesh Kandel, the middle order fell apart.
Taking 3–17 and dismissing important players including captain Sandeep Lamichhane for a duck, Chris Sole (1), and Scott Edwards (15) were among Erasmus' outstanding performances. While Shahab Alam and Karan KC each took a wicket, Kandel also made a contribution with 2-16.
With 25 runs off of 21 balls, including the innings' lone six, Rajesh Pulami was Biratnagar's top scorer. However, he was not given the necessary support by the lower hierarchy. It was a dismal conclusion to the team's innings as Subash Bhandari was run out for six in the last over.
The Kathmandu Gurkhas, who have six points from six games and are now sixth in the standings, are in a game that might decide their fate. To remain in playoff contention, they need to win this game and drastically increase their net run rate. Furthermore, a defeat by Karnali Yaks against the Sudurpaschim Royals on Monday will end their chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
The Biratnagar Kings' season is already finished because they will not be making the playoffs. They finished this game with yet another lackluster showing, finishing their campaign with just four points from six games.
Biratnagar leaves the competition with little to celebrate following a poor season, while Kathmandu puts a lot on the line in this game as they try to make a last-ditch attempt to qualify.
