India wins crucially against Australia to secure a semi-final spot thanks to Rohit Sharma
India's victory over Australia by 24 runs in their final Super 8 match on Monday, June 24, in Gros Islet, guaranteed them a semifinal spot in the T20 World Cup 2024.
India amassed a substantial total of 205 thanks to Rohit Sharma's 92 off just 41 balls, and Australia was unable to chase it down in 15.3 overs, hence India qualified automatically before the match even finished.
India qualified for the semifinals, following South Africa and England as the previous two teams.
At the top of the order, India's skipper Rohit came thundering out of the traps, making mincemeat of the Australian attack with a blazing 92(41) that included seven fours and eight sixes, barely missing a century.
Australia was the first team to score when Virat Kohli skied Josh Hazlewood to Tim David in the deep to leave the field without bothering the scorekeepers.
However, Rohit Sharma, Kohli's opening partner, had a huge early impact, scoring 29 runs off of just one Mitchell Starc to ignite the powerplay.
Afghanistan will compete against Bangladesh in the final Super 8 round match on Tuesday in Kingston, with Australia, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan vying for the final position.
On June 27, India and England, the reigning champions, will square off in the second semifinal at Providence Stadium in Georgetown. On their way to winning the 2022 T20 World Cup, the Three Lions famously defeated India in the semifinals.
