Legends of Indian cricket upheld by World Cup glory
After a 13-year wait, India won the World Cup on Saturday in Barbados by defeating South Africa by seven runs.
Following the game, supporters took to the streets to celebrate and have been sharing sincere social media tributes to the players.
However, three of India's best cricketers, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja, announced their retirement from the format following the match, so the triumph is reportedly bitter-sweet.
While some X users referred to Kohli and Sharma's retirement as "the end of an era," others claimed they had become sports heroes.
Sharma saw his team's victory on Saturday as a moment of atonement after they were defeated by Australia in the 50-over World Cup final eight months prior.
In the championship game, the squad unexpectedly lost after winning ten straight games. Despite dominating the competition, Rohit was unable to lead his team over the finish line in the championship match.
That's the reason the T20 cup holds so significance for him. It mattered even more because, as a captain, this was probably his final chance to win a World Cup.
The triumph on Saturday was also a worthy homage to India's bowlers, who have historically supported the team through difficult times.
