Virat Kohli talks about retiring from Test cricket and connects with Yuvraj Singh at a charity function
Indian cricket star Virat Kohli spoke publicly for the first time about why he had retired from Test cricket. Speaking at a July 8 London charity function, arranged by Yuvraj Singh, Kohli said that age was a big factor in the decision. In lighter vein, he said, "I just dyed my beard two days ago. You know it's time when you're doing that every four days."
Kohli announced his retirement earlier this year prior to the Test series against England. The move stunned everyone, as the 36-year-old is still really fit and fans believed that he could keep playing and reach 10,000 Test runs as well.
Kohli also reflected on his early years in the Indian team, recalling how he was welcomed by the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Zaheer Khan. He recalled Yuvraj's return to cricket after his battle with cancer with fondness and spoke about how he had played that 150-run innings against England in Cuttack. "It was like reliving cricket of our childhood all over again," Kohli reflected.
He also added, "I have a tremendous amount of love and regard for Yuvi pa. I would not attend an event like this for anyone."
In retirement since, Kohli has been leading a low-key life in London, with India resuming their English tour with new captain Shubman Gill at the helm. India recovered from their loss in the first Test by winning at Edgbaston — their first victory there in a Test match. Fans are now hopeful for the future of the side with younger players stepping into the limelight.
