After suffering a crushing loss in the third Sri Lanka ODI, Bangladesh loses the series
Chasing 285, Bangladesh collapsed for a paltry 186, their second time being bowled out under 200 in the series, to lose the series 2-1. Towhid Hridoy top-scored with a laborious 78-ball 51, which reflected the team's overall lack of intent. Sri Lanka's seamers, Asitha Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera, claimed three wickets apiece, while spinners Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga claimed two apiece.
Earlier, Sri Lanka reached 285/7 thanks to a magnificent 124 from Kusal Mendis and 58 from captain Charith Asalanka. The duo shared a precious 124-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Sri Lanka lost momentum in the later stages despite Mendis' 18 fours and compact batting being well-supported by a breezy cameo from Hasaranga (18 off 14). In the 46th over, Mendis was caught by Shamim Hossain. Two wickets apiece for Bangladesh's Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. After tying the series in the second ODI, the Tigers had earlier dreamed of winning their first-ever ODI series on Sri Lankan territory. But their batting folded again. Bangladesh was 165-7 after 35 overs with only Jaker Ali (14*) and Taskin Ahmed left. Earlier, their top order collapsed to 64/3 in 14 overs while chasing 286. Parvez Emon lost his wicket with a mistimed drive off Wellalage, then Fernando and Chameera bowled Tanzid Tamim and Najmul Hossain Shanto, respectively.
Mendis had earlier energized Sri Lanka with a commanding 114-ball 124, combining with Asalanka (58 off 68) to maintain the scoring rate. Hasaranga's late hits took the total past 280, even as Bangladesh pulled things back in the final 10 overs.
Tanvir Islam and Miraz picked up crucial wickets to have Sri Lanka 100/3 after Bangladesh had applied early pressure. Tanzim Hasan Sakib made an early breakthrough when he removed Nishan Madushka, but Mendis and Nissanka rebuilt with an unbroken partnership in the first 10 overs.
Bangladesh bowled after losing the toss in the series-decider at Pallekele. They made one change, bringing back Taskin Ahmed instead of Hasan Mahmud. Sri Lanka played the same team. A win would have meant Bangladesh's maiden ODI series win in Sri Lanka.
